Manual Lymphatic Drainage

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an advanced manual therapy technique developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil and Estrid Vodder, natives of Denmark.  Manual Lymphatic Drainage is type of gentle massage utilizing light strokes to stretch the skin; which encourages the natural circulation of the lymph through the body.  The gentle, rhythmic, pumping massage movements follow the anatomical direction of lymph flow and allow for tissue cleansing.  A healthy lymphatic system depends on respiration, the circulatory system and the movement of skeletal muscles to move fluid through the lymphatic ducts and vessels.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage used for?

The physical therapists at A Different Approach - PT for Women (ADAPT) ultilize Manual Lymphatic Drainage as an effective treatment of acute and chronic edema, including edema following stroke or trauma (such as muscle tears, fractures and surgery).  MLD is also useful in the treatment of local inflammation of the respiratory system including sinusitis and allergies.  MLD has also been shown to help people suffering from migraines and general headaches.  One of the main medical indications for MLD is for people suffering with lymphedema.
