What is Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT)?

Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) is a unique diagnostic and treatment method used to assess and treat pain, dysfunction, disease and disability.  IMT was developed by Dr. Sharon (Weiselfish) Giammatteo to address the needs of complex patients.  IMT is a comprehensive and holistic approach to physical dysfunction.

Under the right circumstances your body has the potential to heal itself.  Tissue repair at the cellular level, like the healing of a cut, is a normal process that occurs within the body.  On the contrary, pain and dysfunction are an indication that there is too much cellular dysfunction for the body to handle on its own and therefore intervention is required.

IMT techniques are hands-on and generally involve gentle manipulative techniques to promote tissue repair, normalize structure and restore function.  Each tissue type in the body is unique and requires techniques specific to the particular tissue.  Multiple systems in the body may be affected by the dysfunction and therefore IMT is the integration of techniques to assess and address all systems in the body.

Who can benefit from Integrative Manual Therapy?

All types of patients can benefit from IMT.  In many cases, patients who seek IMT have undergone previous treatments with limited success.  The physical therapists at A Different Approach - PT for Women (ADAPT), often utilize IMTwhen treating complex patients and have a goal of attaining and maintaining results.
